Incarnation of Love

09 Nov

photo dia1_zps6161f2bb.jpgHelen wasn’t sure what had woken her with a start, the bedside clocks illuminated dials were showing three in the morning.

She pulled the blankets around her, and was trying to make sense of her disturbed sleep.

It wasn’t the rain that was playing a musical tune on her window pane, nor the intermittent flashes of lightning, that broke through the faded curtains.

Helen lay there and let her mind wander over dreams and memories, it was then she realised that what had been playing heavily on her mind lately, and what was interrupting her dreams and sleep.

She remembered it was the 40th anniversary of Hers and Michaels wedding, yes that’s what disturbed her sleep and dreams.

She pulled the blankets firmly around her, and with the music of the raindrops playing a melody of love, upon the window pane, she let her mind wander back over 40 years.

She recalled the nervousness of her wedding day, the Dress, the Bridesmaids, the Service.

All came tumbling back in a memory of emotions, there were tears, there were laughter and there were mishaps, the wedding cake hadn’t arrived.

All these ran through Helens memory, finally the service when Helen and Michael became one in the eyes of God, her tears wouldn’t stop, they couldn’t stop.

The reception was a blur of happiness, there were toasts and laughter, families from both sides were there to wish the newly weds happiness and a long fruitful life.

Helen recalled the moment they left the reception for their honeymoon, someone had painted Just Married over the car, and someone else had attached tin cans to the bumper bar.

They drove away in happiness, covered with confetti and blessings, they drove away into their future.

It was no more than an hour later, that their dreams were destined to be unfulfilled.

Turning onto the highway, the speeding car on their right failed to stop.

Helen let the memory of that night play over her mind, she remembers lots of flashing lights, a siren screamed somewhere in the distance as she faded in and out of conciousness.

It was all a blur, someone broke the news to her, that Michael had not survived the accident

That was the night that Helen had lost her own true love, every night since, she gazes on the stars and says a prayer for her one true love, her Michael, and recalls that fateful night, when Michael was taken from her.

Helen lay there in the bed and let the memories play across her mind, the memories played in tune, to the music of the rain upon her window pane.

The more she listened to the rain, she became convinced it was music, not only music, but music that Michael used to play on the old piano down stairs. No one had touched that piano in over 40 years.

She pulled a robe around her and silently descended the stairs of the old Edwardian house, a gift from the legacy of Michaels Grandfather.

At the bottom step she glanced across to the piano, her imagination taking over, in her mind she could see Michael, as he was in his younger days, Helen’s mind convinced her that Michael was there and playing the piano, not only that, but playing the song he had created for her on their wedding night.

Helen moved silently across the floor, not wishing the vision to fade, she placed a hand on Michaels shoulder, he kept playing.

He knew Helen was there, he could smell her favourite perfume, and felt the radiance of love, that she always bought into a room.

He kept playing the song he wrote for her on their wedding night, as his tears fell across the keyboards, he recalled that wedding night.

He recalled when they drove away from the reception in happiness, covered with confetti and blessings, they drove away into their future.

It was no more than an hour later, that their dreams were destined to be unfulfilled.

Turning onto the highway, the speeding car on their right failed to stop.

Michael let the memory of that night play over his mind,he remembers lots of flashing lights, a siren screamed somewhere in the distance, as he faded in and out of conciousness.

It was all a blur, someone broke the news to him, that Helen had not survived the accident

That was the night that Michael had lost his own true love, every night since, he gazes on the stars and says a prayer for his one true love, his Helen, and recalls that fateful night, when Helen was taken from him.

Hi Sue, I have reread this story a few times, and still get confused, as to who the hell I intended to kill off.
Bit of an enigma I think, is love eternal and still earth bound, I get confused each time I read it, as to what I was trying to portray.
      Regards
      Ian

Never thought of it that way gpcox, I wrote it with a twist at the end, leaving it open as to the ending, to the imagination of the reader,as to who was alive and who had died.
Looking back now with your comment, it does appear as both died.
      Maybe the title was appropriate.
      Cheers
      Ian

@”it does appear as both died.” – not to me… I believe that even though alive, one can die “inside” after such tragedy…

your story is impressive, emotional, heartfelt…

Thank you Melanie, I reread that story a few times, and must admit, the outcome actually confuses me.
There does appear to be a dilemna in the ending, or it appears that a follow up clarification is waiting.
It seems to be a story with no ending.
          Regards
          Ian

… got goose bumps while reading this post, ||Ian … reminds of a slightly different story of an old woman being called to a silver mine, that had collapsed some 60 years ago … with her husband in it … anyway, recently she was called to identify a body … and she sure did … cuz there he was … well preserved in silver nitrate … so young and handsome as can be …
